E6420 vs E6410

Which one would you guys recommend? I am planning to get one from Dell Outlet and with the build quality issues with E6420 I am just a little concerned.

Thanks!

Reply 1 : E6420 vs E6410

the build quality is decent, its more of some very poor design decisions that make it a step back from the E6410 plus it looks horrible IMO

Reply 2 : E6420 vs E6410

It all boils down to what you do with your machine? You render like crazy or do programming? You'd probably be better off with Sandy Bridge and the E6420. Overall business tasks that aren't extremely taxing? Go with the E6410, it will be cheaper and better looking.

Reply 3 : E6420 vs E6410

Thanks guys.. Overall business tasks is what I am looking at and maybe the occasional movie. Looks like E6410 is the way to go.

Reply 4 : E6420 vs E6410

Also, the E6410 has the 16:10 display, which most users prefer. The 1440 x 900 (WXGA+) displays are preferable to the 1280 x 800 (WXGA).

Reply 5 : E6420 vs E6410

Can anyone comment on the difference in screen quality between the E6410 (1440 x 900) and the E6420 (1600 x 900)?

Dell XPS 15 (L501X) Display problem

Ok I bought this laptop a month ago with I5-480 processor.

I am having this weird problem.

On battery mode when I move from dark(black) background web page to bright(white) background web page the display looks dull and it will take few seconds to come to normal.

Is this some sort of power saving feature?

On adapter mode it works fine.

I had contacted the dell chat support, after running some diagnostics and they sent me a new battery with even the same problem I am facing.

Had anyone faced this problem earlier???

Reply 1 : Dell XPS 15 (L501X) Display problem

I have the same "problem" with a L502x. =/

Reply 2 : Dell XPS 15 (L501X) Display problem

There have been some comments about an auto-brightness feature, in the power save profile, whereby the screen/backlight dims and brightens based on what's being displayed. Could be that.

I've not seen it myself, but, to quote:

"

There was an annoying "feature", however, with dynamic contrast - screen would randomly dim and brighten as it pleased. To disable this I had to go into Intel (integrated video) control panel and set the "power saving technology" to the "maximum performance" slider underneath the "battery tab." The issue had previously persisted even when I wasn't on battery.

"

Wrorth trying that?

Reply 3 : Dell XPS 15 (L501X) Display problem

@zygotic

That works.

I should have posted here before contacting the support I guess.

Good that it's fixed. Did you get to keep both batteries?

No.

That would be good if they allow me to keep :P

I have to send back the old one.

G73 Keystroke Problem Reproduced

I am able to reproduce the G73 dropped keystroke problem pretty consistently using a specialized data analysis packaged called STATA. When I am entering data in the data editor, for example the number 33, I type 33 very quickly and press enter to set that cell to 33. I can see *both* 3s in the cell but when I press enter, only one 3 actually gets entered. If I go very slowly, the error never happens. The problem is not hitting the chiclet key perfectly. I can press it uber hard, squarely, and as long as it's quick enough, it will drop the second hit.

I can make this happen pretty much at will, so if Gary Key would like to contact me or just use that software package, perhaps that would go a long way toward fixing this annoying problem.

I'm not sure its that simple. Some people have the problems on the G73JHs others don't. I know I did, but after the BIOs update, running ATK 1.0.0008, and synaptics 15.2.7, the problems has gone away for me. I noticed it quite frequently being consoled into Cisco routers and typing command line commands, but now, everything seems fine for me.

One thing you left out was what model laptop you have

Reply 2 : G73 Keystroke Problem Reproduced

G73JW-A

Clearly there's a problem though, if it is exhibiting this behavior. Reproducibility goes a long way to finding out the source of the issue and solving it. Just offering a way to reproduce it with a probability of 0.5.

Reply 3 : G73 Keystroke Problem Reproduced

I'm not saying it might not help, just saying that it may no be reproducible on all machines. Shoot it to Gary in email, he left his email addy in the first post for that huge thread for the G73jh on missing keyboard strokes.

Reply 4 : G73 Keystroke Problem Reproduced

There is no software fix for people who have the problem as bad as me. No BIOS update or software package could help. This is a hardware issue. The only fix is placing a piece coroplast between the frame of the laptop. ASUS have long abandoned this problem and you will NOT get a reply from Gary. It's nice to know that you at least have a system that proves we're not all crazy

CAN NOT CONNECT TO MY INTERNET PROVIDER

I can NOT get my email on Windows Mail or get on to IE9 .....my computer will not connect tomy internet services (road runner). Road runner check out my line, replaced my modem and said everything was good on there end.

I am using Vista, Windows Mail and IE9.

In the Device Manager --Network adapters-- I have the yellow triange showing on Microsoft 6 to 4 adapter #10 and #14 and #19 does this mean any thing relating to my problem??

What should I check??

Reply 1 : CAN NOT CONNECT TO MY INTERNET PROVIDER

...downloading the driver for your network adapters? It may be something as simple as installing the newest driver for the network device. Did the computer EVER connect correctly or did this just recently happen. Are you trying to connect through an ethernet/wired connection or a wireless connection? Unfortunately, you've not given us the make and model of the computer or any of the things you've already tried to fix the problem, and as such, it's tough to give effective advice.

If you haven't already performed this step, and because malware can cause such issues, please download the free removal tool on a separate computer, then install it on the problem machine. Once it's installed, then run the updater file I've listed below to get it current. Once that's done, run a full system scan to check for malware.

Malwarebytes Installer Download Link (Clicking on the links below will immediately start the download dialogue window.)

Malwarebytes Manual Updater link

This problem just occured a week ago before the computer has work beautiful for the last 21/2years

This is a desktop connected thru an ethernet/wired connection with roadrunner

I don't know where to go to get the drivers for my network adapters

Reply 3 : CAN NOT CONNECT TO MY INTERNET PROVIDER

Since it's occurred on a wired connection, which are generally quite
reliable unless the ethernet card has failed, try downloading the
ethernet LAN driver from the Gateway link below.. (Download and install
the "LAN driver" by Realtek AND the "Chipset Driver" (it includes the ethernet driver), listed there and follow the steps to restart
the machine.)

http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2664

See
if things work correctly now.. If they don't, then the next step would
be to open the case and see if the ethernet jack/card is embedded of the
motherboard or whether it's a separate card.. Either way, a new
ethernet card would be the best option for getting things running again.

Hope this helps.

Reply 4 : CAN NOT CONNECT TO MY INTERNET PROVIDER

The Network adapters still have the yellow triangle showing on Microsoft 6 to 4 adapter #10 and #14 and #19 does this mean any thing relating to my problem?? Should I delete them or does this spell disaster? I downloaded the driver from gateway that you suggested but how do I know if it is installed correctly or which one the computer is now using?

Reply 5 : CAN NOT CONNECT TO MY INTERNET PROVIDER

If the drivers had installed correctly, all the yellow exclamation marks would be gone.. Since they aren't gone, see if Windows can re-recognize the devices by uninstalling the device.. Open Device Manager, then RIGHT click on each of the yellow devices, choose "Uninstall" from the list. Uninstall each of the items, then restart the computer. If the adapter is still "alive", Windows will recognize it during the restart and should install the drivers required for it..

If this step doesn't fix the issue, then I'll suggest purchasing a new ethernet adapter and installing it. If you're not up to the task of installing an ethernet card (it's really not hard to do), you could ask a local computer shop to do it for you.

Hope this helps.

grin Thank you very much!!!! happy

The device manager only shows the new drivers that we downloaded from Gateway. Everthing seems to be working fine.

Thank you for being so patience and giving such good details.

Desktop - no video, sound, or keyboard lights

I'm normally the guy who fixes peoples computer (not professional, just hobbiest), but this issue is a little elusive.

Normally if their is a simple hardware working issue I would hear beeps or the computer would POST, then complain. In this case, I get no sounds, or video, and not even the keyboard lights turn on, HOWEVER the computer is powered on, and the fans are running.

I've already tried reseating all power cables in the case, and that allowed my computer to turn on for 30 minutes, then it shutdown unexpectedly and wouldn't fully turn on again.

I'm going to try using a different GPU (8800gtx) and take out all but one stick of ram, but I don't think either will make a difference.
That is the extend of the hardware I can switch out. If this doesn't work I'm thinking of buying a power supply just to see if that will solve the issue.

System:
q6600
EP43 UD3L
4gb Patriot
Sparkle gt 470
OCZ 700w PSU

I'm looking for both suggestions for troubleshooting and estimates as to what the issue could be. My guess is the power supply.

Reply 1 : Desktop - no video, sound, or keyboard lights

I did try replacing the GPU and that didn't solve it.
Tomorrow I will contact local suppliers and try and get my hands on a temp GPU.

Reply 2 : Desktop - no video, sound, or keyboard lights

I had an unit like that. It turned out that someone unplugged the ATX12V connector.

Fans and such worked, but no blink on the keyboard or much else.
Bob

Reply 3 : Desktop - no video, sound, or keyboard lights

If so, I think your hypothesis may be correct.
When I was trying to get it to work earlier, I reseated all of the power cables including that one, and it turned on for a while, before failing again.

Further my PSU is annoying and actually seperates that 24 pin connector into two parts, both plug into the same plug: 20 pins on the left and 4 pins on the right. Is this normal? It sounds like a bad design.

Reply 5 : Desktop - no video, sound, or keyboard lights

I admit I didn't replug the processor power plug. It is under a huge power sink, so in order to replug it in I have to remove the heatsink and reattach it.

Still, I should try this. I'll do it tomorrow when I'm less inebriated. Thanks for the suggestion.
Also as an update, I didn't get around to getting a PSU today, and I'll have to wait till after easter Monday, because everywhere is closed. Thanks a lot for the help thus far. I'll update on Tuesday. Again, thanks.

Reply 6 : Desktop - no video, sound, or keyboard lights

Ok I am quite sure that this is a motherboard related issue. The MB needs to be fixed. After some point of time the capacitors becomes week and that result in the above situation. Again there can be 1000's of more reason for your problem but this one come first in my list

I need help with a problem with my Dell Studio 1737 laptop

I have a black screen on Dell Studio 1737 laptop. When I was connecting my VGA cable from my TV to my laptop (both were on big mistake) anyway there was a small spark from the cable connection to the VGA connection on the laptop, and my screen went black and all the media control lights went on and stayed on. (not normal behavior) I turned off the laptop with the on/off switch, waited a few minutes and turned the switch back on. The media control lights came on briefly just like they normally do,but then there was nothing no light on the on/off switch and a black screen. I am hoping that someone might have a guess as to which path from the VGA connection that the short may have taken. Thank You in advance for any ideas that might help. Ron

Sorry but when I see that and hear that story I have the techs write up an estimate for motherboard LCD HDD, DVDRW and LCD to give the worst case scenario. (local law demands we give an estimate that we can't exceed.) Yes it's likely to be just the motherboard but you never know.

Compaq monitor help???

So my teenage daughter got a Compaq V3100 for Christmas a few years ago and the screen quit working (just stays black all the time), so I did the right thing (yeah right) and bought her another Compaq Presario CQ61 last year for Christmas. Well last month it started acting up and the screen (yet another Compaq with monitor issues) would only work if held in a very precise angle about 45* from open. Now, the screen is just black all the time.

I was told that I could hook up an external monitor to the laptop and still use it/extract data. I grabbed my old LiquidVideo LCD and plugged the video out cable into the port on the laptop. Tried on both of the broken Compaq laptops with no luck, the LCD shows, "No input". I tried pressing "Fn" and "f4" with no luck. Tried powering down and plugging the cable in them powering up, still no luck. Any ideas? Help please, she has finals thesis papers due next week and they are stored on the CQ61.

Reply 1 : Compaq monitor help???

1. Try the old generic laptop reset (does not reset the hard drive data!) noted at http://forums.cnet.com/7726-19681_102-3138013.html?tag=posts;msg3138013

2. Remove the HDD and use some adapter cable like http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=2020 to gain access to the files.

The PRECISE ANGLE is a clue it's a cable or connector issue. I think your grey haired electronics technicians would love to look at that model.
Bob

Reply 2 : Compaq monitor help???

Generally, the graphics card will only show the primary screen as default unless it's set to perform differently.. Therefore, although it should be possible to setup the remote monitor as the primary screen, or as a clone of the main screen, you must be able to see the screen to do so. You'll need to see the graphics card/monitor display properties to do so. That might be possible on a computer where the screen is able to be viewed.. Not possible when you can't do anything at all.

My daughter had a similar problem with an HP DV6000 series laptop.. After four years (not bad for a laptop), only the top half of the screen worked as designed. Pressing on the screen at a particular location or tilting it at just the right angle allowed for viewing. We changed the settings on the graphics dispaly and the remote monitor worked fine but we were still able to see parts of the screen when the changes were made. We recently replaced it with a new laptop.

Hope this helps.

email folders

how do i download email folders to a flash drive in yahoo mail.my o s is vista.compaq presario.2 gigs.yeah i know.old slow but in her defense loyal and never tells me to pick up my socks.don't tell my wife i said that

Reply 1 : email folders

Yahoo Webmail can't be "downloaded" as you would imagine. Basically, it's viewed on the web only. You can create a separate folder on yahoo mail, called "Saved Items" or something similar, then move all your important messages to that folder so it's no longer in the main folders.. Or, if there is a particular message you want to save, you could print each message to a pdf file, assuming you have program like PDF Creator to create PDF file. Or simply print out each message.....but this isn't really appropriate if you've got entire folders full of mail.

Or, if you have the "paid for" version of Yahoo Mail Plus, you could then use an onboard mail client like Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook to download the messages to your computer using POP3 access.. (The free version of Yahoo mail won't accommodate use of POP3 mail clients.)

Sorry.

Hope this helps.

Need help: Dell XPS 15 2nd gen

Hey guys, I'm planning on ordering myself a Dell XPS 15 very soon. I've just got a few questions before I make my purchase, I hope you guys can help

The specs are:

i5 2410M

1366x768

6GB DDR3

500GB 7200RPM

525M 1gb

Blu Ray

9cell batt

bluetooth 3

backlit keyboard

Total: $1049.99

So I'm wondering, will the 9cell battery protrude out of the bottom?

Also, is there anyway I can lower the price with coupons? I've tried a few but they don't work...

Is there anything I should know about the Dell before I finalize my purchase? I'm still a bit worried since its my first time making such a large purchase over the internet... Thanks alot!

Dyou know any way of getting it downgrade to an i5? I was didn't choose i7 because I hear it drains the battery much faster..

Reply 3 : Need help: Dell XPS 15 2nd gen

may be try ordering it over the phone (entire order)

Reply 4 : Need help: Dell XPS 15 2nd gen

Please do yourself a favor and get the i7 2630 and 1080 screen....the battery does stick out on the bottom. i suggest you get 2 batteries if you're concerned.

Reply 5 : Need help: Dell XPS 15 2nd gen

Seconded (Thirded actually) for the 1080p screen, and the i7-2630QM that comes with it in that upgraded model.

The 1080p B+RGLED screen is the best part about the XPS 15

Also the i7 battery drain issue mainly applied to the previous generation i7 quad cores that didn't support Optimus and were more power hungry in general.

but if you're really concerned about it, you can "upgrade" to the dual-core i7-2620M that will be about the same as the i5's (possibly better at idle power because it's made from better quality silicon). I'd still keep the 2630QM though.

Reply 6 : Need help: Dell XPS 15 2nd gen

oh I forgot to mention I'm going to be using it for gaming (sc2) and for university next year... I was looking for something with a good battery life.

How long can I expect the battery to hold doing just normal school work with the i7 setup?

Thanks everyone!

Reply 7 : Need help: Dell XPS 15 2nd gen

the 9-Cell should get around 5-6 hours. Maybe a bit closer to 5 hours with the quad core, and a bit closer to 6 hours with the dual-core.

(This is based on what other people have said. Could someone possibly confirm this?)

Reply 8 : Need help: Dell XPS 15 2nd gen

I got like 4hrs 45 mins with the i5-2410 and only a 6-cell battery.

But I was just doing web browsing and word processing... etc.

Reply 9 : Need help: Dell XPS 15 2nd gen

IMO FullHD is NOT a must in screen this size. the pixel size difference is hardly noticeable(is this even a word )

eMachine T6212 Restore Disk

I have a big problem

I formatted my harddrive and installed Windows Professional x64 edition, but i cant use quite a few things because i dont have the drivers for the computer.

well eMachine doesnt have the drivers available for download yet, so my only option is to find the driver (ive been looking i cant find them) or to use the System Restore disks

Well i never made a system restore disk, i figured they would come premade, so i need a copy of it but they cost 20 (shipping and handling, the disks are free), but luckly if you have a T6212 all the restore disks are the same.

So i was wondering if someone could make a torrent file of there system restore disk so i could download,

I have an eMachine T6212 and did a total back-up of all drivers using MyDrivers version 3.11 http://drivers.soft32.com/driver/download-My_Drivers-9326.html. I also made a back-up copy of the computer, as was when I bought it. If you have an email address I will send you a zip fill of all of the drivers, including the Microsoft driver that you probably already installed when you installed XP professional.

Do you have a copy of Nero, the CD burning software that came installed.

p.s. I installed an upgraded Video card, and the drivers would be included in the zip. Just be sure you don't install the drives for the ATi Radeon 800 Xl

Reply 6 : What exactly do you use your laptop for?

I use my laptop for practically everything. Surfing the web, communicating with friends and family in a variety of ways (text chat, audio chat, video chat), home entertainment system, editing photos and video, work for school, work involving my job, blogging, personal writing (novels/short stories/poetry and keeping up with my personal journals), playing videogames (of course), listening to music, independently educating myself on a variety of subjects, extensive reading (such as newspapers and periodicals on a daily basis), watching baseball games, compiling and analyzing statistical data, managing my finances... And I know I'm forgetting a ton of other stuff, but that's what comes off the top of my head, at this moment.

CF-19 XP Issues

Hello,

I have a CF-19 FHGAXAM running XP that hangs on XP splash screen. I think the MB record is corrupt, not sure. Cant even get into safemode, it hangs on mup.sys.

I tried to get into the recovery console to run the fix but there is a password and it is not known. I then tried to run the XP repair off the CD and it blue screens during the hardware set up. I did have to load the SATA driver at F6.

This is a friends laptop that he has special software to diagnose outboard motors and Id rather not wipe this machine out.

These Toughbooks seem like hardware nightmares...

Any sugestions would be great!!! Please

Try a google search for mup.sys. Many people have similar problems and have posted many solutions. Most of the time it seems that mup.sys is not the problem. The problem lies with some piece of hardware.

Display driver stopped responding and has recovered.

Got up this morning and went to check my email and found this message on the action bar that the display driver had stopped and has recovered and something about NDIVIA (?) Sorry but I can't find the message on my machine. HP Pavilion p6242f Desktop, Windows 7, 64 bit, just over a year old. I have never seen this before; it couldn't be related to the huge Windows updates released this week, could it?

Any help appreciated.

Reply 1 : Display driver stopped responding and has recovered.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and it's happened to me a couple of times. I don't get Bob's XP claim though.

NVidia is your video or graphics card inside the computer. It uses drivers, (small operating system files), and sometimes they fail temporarily for any reason.

Windows 7 is far better than previous Windows OS versions in that it can do this, recover from such temporary glitches. It's a bit scary when it happens, but as Windows users we get used to these things.

It is unlikely to be related to any Windows updates, except for one possibility. Windows Updates will often offer us updated drivers for our hardware. The recommendation is, do not allow Windows to update drivers! Microsoft doesn't do drivers very well at all and we are better leaving those alone and if need be, seek updates for such things from the hardware makers web sites themselves.

But even then, we don't update drivers unless and until something needs them. It's the old maxim, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

So, the best advice at the moment is, see how it goes. If it happens again soon then come back here, but hopefully it won't happen too often.

Hope that helps.

Mark

My Full battery (T420) test if interested

I was interested in how far a full battery (6 cell) charge would go with all settings cranked up to high or near high, and got about . I got down to 7% when I got the final warning that it would go into hibernate mode automatically if I did not connect to another power source.

Heavy internet usage, Wordpad, Youtube a little, 20 minutes veiwing "2012"Netflex movie, and the screen at the full 15 setting.

For me, the range was just fine. Using "Some" battery life settings, I know I would be just fine on the road until I found a power plug.

Movies was another matter. The one movie I viewed "2012" was OK, but it was not steller. Had to view the screen straight on or it would not look right. YouTube viewing was better for some reason. Of course, I did not purchase this notebook for games, movies as such but for work and Internet usage.

HP C5280 Photosmart All in One inkjet printer

I have a soon to be 3 year old HP C5280 Photosmart All-In-One inkjet printer which I have been very pleased with since I purchased it. My only complaint is I can't print on No. 6 envelopes or any other odd size envelopes like Hallmark greeting card envelopes, Christmas card envelopes, etc. I can print on No. 10, No. 11, and No 14 size envelopes but not on any of the ones I have mentioned previously above.

I can go to MS Word on my computer and create a custom sized envelope template equal to the dimensions of a No. 6 envelope but when I attempt to print on a No. 6 envelope my printer has something called HP image viewer and up pops an image of an envelope on a blue screen which looks nothing like a No. 6 envelope, instead it looks more like an 8" x 8" envelope.

I go ahead and insert one No. 6 envelope into the main paper tray of my printer, slide the guide bar over in place to keep the envelope in place then hit print. An error message soon appears saying print job cannot be completed due to mismatched paper size, hit cancel to stop print job and try again. I have a 13 year old HP Deskjet 895Cse inkjet printer which still works great and can run circles around my C5280 printer when it comes to doing print jobs. I can even print on USPS Certified Mail return receipt green cards using my HP Deskjet 895Cse inkjet printer but not on my Photosmart C5280.

I contacted HP tech support a few days ago, spoke to someone in India who wanted to charge me $20.00 to troubleshoot my problem since my printer was no longer under warranty, I told the tech no. The tech put me on hold to do some checking, came back on the phone after about 5 minutes and told me I could not print on No. 6 envelopes on my C5280 printer because it was not set up to allow me to print on No. 6 envelopes.

I didn't buy the tech's story but thanked him anyway. My feeling is this, if I can create a custom size envelope that matches the dimensions of a No 6 envelope on my computer why can't I print on a No. 6 envelope when I can print on larger envelopes like No. 10's, 11's and 14's? My Deskjet 895Cse can print on envelopes as small as 2.5" high x 3.5" wide, the size of envelopes you might see on a flower arrangement in a flower shop. Does anyone from HP monitor this forum because I'd like to know why I cannot print on No. 6 envelopes with my HP Photosmart C5280 inkjet printer.

By now you know that Word envelope printing has many issues. HP is not on the hook to fix Word's envelope glitches. I will not supply links about Microsoft's gaffes on Word envelopes but move directly to how I deal with this.

1. I don't use envelope options.
2. I put in on a normal sheet and then print it but supply the envelope instead.

This has worked for years and is only annoying to those that want envelope printing to work proper in Word.

Good luck trying to get all the players to fix it.
Bob

Reply 2 : HP C5280 Photosmart All in One inkjet printer

Bob I have been around but let me see if I understand what you're saying. Rather than go to envelopes to create a custom sized envelope you size a sheet of paper to match the size of the envelope, insert your envelope in your paper tray then print? That's what I've always done, my printer has a slot to insert one envelope at a time but I don't use it, I always remove my inkjet paper from the main paper tray, then insert the envelope into the main paper tray, slide the guide bar over to hold the envelope in place, slide my paper tray back into place until it locks, then check my print review again to make sure the information on my envelope I'm about to print is correct then I hit print. That's the way it should always work. If I can't make it work I still have my 13 year old HP Deskjet 895Cse to use as a backup because I can definitely print No. 6 envelopes and even smaller ones on it. I drag it out every Christmas just so I can address the envelopes for all of my Christmas cards.

Reply 3 : HP C5280 Photosmart All in One inkjet printer

But gaffe after gaffe on Microsoft's part about the Envelope routine I had to find a way.

Doesn't the slot work if you get the text proper on the screen?

2-1 WIreless Router/Modem...which is best?

I currently have a wireless modem/router(2-1) from Qwest...2Wire 2700HG-D that is about 6 years old. I'm looking to upgrade and want to have same 2-1 vs. buying a modem and router. Interested in getting at least most current and hopeful to get one that won't be obsolete anytime soon...so a N+? Just going to use for desktop via ethernet, 2 laptops connected wireless and printer to use either wireless and/or via ethernet/usb cable. Any suggestions on a 2-1 that is best and wont' break the bank? Thank You!

Reply 1 : 2-1 WIreless Router/Modem...which is best?

Does your current platform work. I would turn off the router function in the device from qwest and use it only as a modem. This will allow you much more selection in the routers. It also give you the option to move to another type of provider (ie cable or something). If you MUST replace the modem part then I will defer to others to recommend a particular brand.

In general you want a nothing less than a N router, getting hard to find ones that are not N anyway. Also depending your budget the dual band routers allow for flexibility.

A point to remember is that wireless routers will slow down to the slowest device you have. If you have B mode wireless it will more or less force everything to run that slow. So unless your other devices already run N or you plan to upgrade them all you will see little improvement just replacing the router.

SSG-3300CR Active Bluetooth 3d glasses on PS58C7000?

Hi all,

Have been looking forward to the release of the newer slimlight bluetooth 3d glasses for my PS58C7000 as i had heard they would be reducing the dreaded ghosting and terrible synch loss issues that plague our sets and now it appears they won't be compatible with my C series tv.

Can someone confirm or (preferably) deny this for me? Are there plans to release a bluetooth adapter or are those of us who supported samsung 3d early on getting kicked in the teeth with the release of these glasses?

Also will they be getting an australian release (i know it's assumed we'll be stuffed around on release dates but it'd be nice to know) and if not are the international ones compatible?

Looking forward to your responses.

Dave.

Reply 1 : SSG-3300CR Active Bluetooth 3d glasses on PS58C7000?

dayvb,

The information I have on the new Bluetooth glasses (2011) is that they won't be compatible with the 2010 TV models. The 2010 products have IR, and the 2011 glasses do not support IR.

I don't know if international products will vary by region. I would believe that they would NOT vary, but again, that's speculation at this point on products that aren't yet released.

I don't have further information on Australian releases, but I hope that helps answer your question.

I wouldn't think it would be to hard to create a bluetooth driver for a bluetooth dongle to allow the new 3D bluetooth glasses to work with 2010 3D TVs. Come on Samsung, Stop screwing with us and get with the times!

I'm in exactly the same boat. I got so upset when I found that the newer and cheaper one would not work with the 2010 models. I wrote samsung a couple of emails to let them hear my option and even sent a product idea requiest for a bluetooth adapter. How hard can that be, tey already have a wifi adapter. I figure if I don't express my opinion then no one would hear me. We all have to contact Samsung so they can hear us.

It's possible that your BIOS settings are corrupted.
Unplug the computer, open it up and locate the CMOS battery on the motherboard. It's a small watch type disc battery (usually a 2032).
Remove the battery from its holder and wait 30 or 30 minutes.
Reinsert the battery and restart the computer.

Reply 8 : PC can't get past loading screen

I'll try all this soon thanks for the help

Reply 9 : PC can't get past loading screen

Are you able to go into CMOS page? Or start the computer without the Compaq logo ?
Starting the computer without the Compaq Logo will help you to determine where the problem lies. Simply bcoz once the memory check completes, it will check for hard drives and CD/DVD ROM. If the drives failed to be initialized, then it might be possible to track down the root cause of the problems.

Really odd PC fan activity

So, this is odd. I've built many computers, but this is a first.

I have a computer that I put together three years ago, that I built using an Antec case that came with a stock Antec 500w 80+ power supply and a stock 120mm case fan. I (for odd reasons) ended up with an aftermarket 550w 80+ power supply that I decided I should swap out. Why? Well, the new supply has one of those big fans that points down, and it doesn't work with another computer I am working on. The existing power supply has an 80mm fan that points out the back, which I could use in the new computer (rack mount, hopefully).

So I made the switch. Now, at odd times, my computer freezes up when I wake it from sleep. And my case fan (NOT the power supply, and NOT the cpu fan) slowly starts speeding up. It sounds like it's going to explode. Speed fan tells me it gets up to like 10k rpm! Normally it's somewhere around 3k! Honestly, it sounds like a bomb in a movie right before the building explodes. But then...Windows starts working normally...and the fan slowly starts...slowing down. I don't know if this has anything to do with the new power supply, but I haven't changed anything else.

Thoughts?

Reply 1 : Really odd PC fan activity

When a PC starts to hibernate it will shutdown or idle the PC. This in turn shuts the fan(s) one by one or all, except maybe the PSU. When it wakes-up because it was stewing in its own heat bath, it senses the temp change and quickly throttles-up and that means RPMs. The greater RPM is allowing the PC to catch-up to a safe cool level and proceed which is normal. Make sure the new PSU fan is working right. I'm sure the fan pointing down is really sucking out the hot air, rather than blwing down. Though, that could be very possible as such setups are made that way to directly help cool the cpu. However, the freeze maybe a response to safe-guard the PC or is shutting down in order to save itself. This could also be part of ACPI or power modes. You need to recheck everything in the bios and/or your setup and play with it. You may need to check the fan ordination as well because once a change is made, while minor is a major factor in some aspects. I can't make a definite answer as too many factors make a PC work now and custom PCs just add to this, only a hands-on and observation plus trial&error may make it settle down to your liking.

tada -----Willy happy

Reply 2 : Really odd PC fan activity

Thanks Willy! This makes sense, except for one thing: my setup doesn't hibernate on it's own...I have a button on the keyboard that can send the computer into hibernation. However, the problem arises when the computer has gone to sleep. This happens when the system goes idle, the monitor goes into power saving mode, and...well, actually, I'm not even sure what happens to the computer then! Once one move the mouse or hits the keyboard, the monitor comes back on, and then the problem begins.

I will recheck everything, like you suggested. As for the orientation of the power supply fan, I was under the impression that ATX psus can only be installed one way, and the placement of the screws ensures that. LOL, it's a mess!

Reply 3 : Really odd PC fan activity

If you have various or any USB devices attached when this happens that can cause issues or rather you need to wait until it clears itself. The more devices, the more time involved, which is why i mentioned the setup various and it boils down to what you have. Sleep, hibernate, i don't differentiate, though others can, it really is basically the same thing. Also, the topic itself has been discussed before. Sometimes, the real fix is to get a similar PSU like you're older one and hopefully a larger wattage unit and leave it at that. I can't tell from here all your details, but regardless it again needs you to pay attention to details AND WHAT MAY WORK best. I leave out any updates, OS issues, older USb devices, etc., I'll take nothing for granted.

Reply 4 : Really odd PC fan activity

machine, fans with speed controls from MB input would start up running fast and slow down once Windows was up and running. If I halted the boot process and checked the temperature posted in the BIOS, it was much higher than the ASUS PC Probe would report after Windows loaded. The temperature would slowly come down. This was a dual boot machine with on HD running XP and the other running Win 2K. When I'd run Win 2K, PC Probe would report the higher temperature and show the fans at higher RPM. Some research I did suggested that XP was much better at handling power usage...whatever that's supposed to mean. Because I got different temperature values on the same machine depending on which drive I'd boot from, I believe the XP information was correct. The machine would run very hot and fans would turn fast when I'd interrupt the boot process and stay in BIOS screens and things would cool off once XP finished loading. Some sort of magic, I guess.

Maintenance and Security

This question is very important to me because I'm not clear with what Miccrosoft security if any I should use and what does my Avast Free addition covers. I want to have all bases covered both on my desktop and my laptop. The desktop has Vista Ultimate and the laptop has Windows 7 both have the Avast free anti virus. What concerns me is do I have a firewall with Avast do I have all the necessary features needed to keep my systems clean. Also if you could recommend anything that I should do to keep everything tidy. What about defragmenting, should I do this and if so how often? Thanks for whatever tips you can give me to keep my systems healthy, you are more than appreciated, your my "computer bible" lol

Reply 1 : Maintenance and Security

It's a good question, and of course a very important one.

First of all, defragmenting is not required that often. With today's large hard disks it could take an age to do anyway, but constant defragmenting is not called for and doesn't help with maintenance or performance that it may have done with Windows 95/98 or ME. Once or twice a year may be sufficient, but I have been using my system for some time now and have not even considered it.

Your free version of Avast is a good option for anti-virus scanning and I see no reason to change that if you are happy with it.

It does not include a firewall so you need to ensure your Windows Firewall is turned on on both machines. Both Vista's and Win 7's Security Center should be telling you about this if their firewalls are not turned on. But if not, goto Control Panel > Security Center, (that may be Control Panel > Action Center, then Security in Win 7), to check.

Windows Updates needs to be turned on.

Anti-virus scanners do a good job with viruses, but make sure the scanner is kept up to date and is scheduled to scan regularly, (mine scans every day). However, viruses are not the only threat and you also need 'additional' protection against malware. We often recommend the two free versions of Malwarebytes Anti-malware and SUPERAntiSpyware.

They are stand-alone scanners and do not need to be set to run in the background. Just run them once a week or so to update their definitions and run a full scan. SAS will attempt to set itself to run on startup, so you may want to look out for that and disable it.

Both your systems may already have Microsoft's own Windows Defender installed, and this is also a reasonable anti-spyware scanner, but I would not have it running in the background. Instead, use the scanners I suggested above.

There are plenty of other tips, and you could do worse than reading Jimmy's TIPS FOR A PROBLEM FREE COMPUTING EXPERIENCE.

That post of Jimmys' is about other problems, but his Tips are relevant in general. You do not need to heed all of his {personal} suggestions.

I hope that helps.

Reply 2 : Maintenance and Security

Thank you so much Mark I am going to take heed and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware , just to verify I just install one version per computer, correct? I don't understand what you mean about running in the background and how you set that up on your computer. If you could please explain that and also all the programs that I don't use (mainly all the Micrsoft prograsms) but scared to click them off and would it make much difference in adding space to my drive? Thanks again for your help Mark, I wish they came with user manuels

Reply 3 : Maintenance and Security

If you treat each of the two computers separately then each one needs a firewall, an anti-virus, and one or two 'anti-malware' scanners.

It isn't an absolute necessity for either computer to have both MBAM and SAS installed; just one would do on each computer, but on my computers they all have both MBAM and SAS installed. My systems have the anti-virus scanner scheduled to run every day, but MBAM and SAS are not scheduled. I simply choose one or the other utility, once a week, update its definitions, and run a manual scan then.

Running in the background is what your Avast free version does. At least it should be. When it is installed it should set that during the installation process. Every time the computer opens programs or uses data, the anti-virus, (AV), scans the data for viruses. Neither MBAM nor SAS needs to do that and in fact having them running in the background can cause conflicts as they try to scan the same files as the AV does.

The free version of MBAM doesn't allow that anyway, so no problem there, but the free version of SAS does attempt to set itself to run at startup, and that is not advisable.

If you have Windows Defender installed on each, (or on either), computer, then it may already be running in the background. If so, I would disable that.

I hope that helps.

Mark

Reply 4 : Maintenance and Security

Thank you for lifting a worry some problem, I now have both MBAM and SAS. One more thing, to disable Windows Defender I'll be monitering my own security correct?

Reply 5 : Maintenance and Security

Yes that means you will be in control.

But before doing anything further, lets see if Windows Defender is actually installed and running on both of your computers. Easy to do.

With Windows loaded and running, right click the Taskbar and select "Task Manager" and a new window will display. This window should have tabs. Click the "Processes" tab. This will list all processes running on the computer(s) in alphabetical order. If the list is not in alpha order, click the column header called 'Image Name'.

If there is an option along the bottom for "Show Processes for all users", click that. This will list all processes which might not normally be listed.

Look down the list for "MsMpEng.exe". If you do not see that, then Windows Defender is not running.

If you do see that entry, then Windows Defender is running in the background. Close the Task Manager down then goto Start, and search for Windows Defender. Click the entry that is listed. In the Windows Defender window that opens, goto Tools then Options.

Look down the list (use the scroll bar if necessary), and remove ticks for automatic scanning and any Real-Time Protection settings. More about these settings here;
http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista/configuring-options-in-windows-defender/

Why turn it off? If WD is scanning the whole time in the background, then it can interfere or conflict with Avast's background scanning. Scanning for viruses continuously is much preferred over scanning for spyware, because viruses present the greater risk.

Once WD is disabled that doesn't mean you are less protected. Both MBAM and SAS do a better job of scanning for spyware and other malware than WD does, and you only need to run those once a week or so.

But as I say, the more of my tips you follow, the better the overall experience will be. I try to cover the full spectrum, not just avoiding malware. If everyone were a more considerate neighbor, so to speak, there would be considerably fewer issues with the Internet. We can't control the actions of others, but we can control our own actions and make a conscious choice to rise above it all in the hopes of inspiring others to do the same. Even should we fail, we can at least go to sleep each night knowing that we are not part of the problem.

Reply 7 : Maintenance and Security

In as much the "freebies" do a good job, they have usually been proven to be less than capable in *all* regards of security. Basically, in most reports or reviews I've seen they come in at 3-4 place or worse. Not, that they can't do the job on typical or "in the wild" malware, etc., they simply don't measure up in a severe test of abilities. A paid-for version of some virus protection or its suite, will do better and offer faster up-to-date protection signatures, etc.. It boils down, you get what you paid for. If you feel your PC protection is worth at least the price of 1-install or 3-install package price against all the problems you may face to correct one, then think freebie vs. commercial product.

You will need a firewall, virus and trojan protection and malware scanner. As stated above the freebie do a good job and I firmly believe that free firewall and malware scanner are very good, but virus and trojan are a weak area int he earliest stage(day-0). If you interest is for some small or any business, then buy the commercial product period.

Depends on the threat. Commercial AV suites tend to do a horrendous job when it comes to detecting malware compared to fee programs. OTOH, programs like MBAM don't even attempt to discover viruses, trojans, worms, or rootkits.

The problem is you Windows users have been poisoned by this idea of a single super cure-all program that does everything for you. It doesn't work that way. It may be a pain to keep a small fleet of programs maintained, but having different programs that focus only on a single task, and excel at that task above all others, is far far better than a single uber program that will try and do everything and fail to do much of anything in the end. It also provides would-be attackers a common point of attack. All your defenses are tied to a single mass of code written by the same people. Any defect in that code provides a way for attackers to shut down all your defenses at once. As opposed to a more layered system with different programs from different vendors, where would be attackers have to defeat them one by one.

The alternative, is my method of carefully selecting your programs and altering your behaviors to avoid things which may be problematic. It's the computer version of avoiding parts of town known to be dangerous, and making sure you lock your door at night, etc. If you don't use Internet Explorer or file sharing programs, your malware exposure risk drops to near zero for example. A few simple things of that nature and you can all but eliminate the need for all those programs.

Tear it apart and clean it all once done. Re-assemble again to include the cpu paste, etc., and reseat all cards. If it works, great, if not, then do a total re-install. If you can get it going, maybe do a back-up. I find it strange you mention "humidity" if that's factor where you're at, then by all means, recheck everything. A small bridge can develop in some area and/or cause an issue. However, when it comes to non-boots and infrequent stable boots, I tend to swap the PSU out and try again. You may want to dissemble and try on cardboard or non-conducting material and build a minimum system and restart again.

They follow the same convention as they always have been. The forum however acknowledges only the common ones. So enter your smiley and then "preview" your post to see if it took.

Please ignore the other post as it was placed in error for another problem, begins as;
"Tear it apart and clean it all once done.", sorry. -----Willy wink

Seeing as how your username is the same as the product you are promoting I would suggest you heed Bob's advice and sort out that WOT rating before you promote your software any more. Reputations are important in this world.

Can any help me with AD user backups?

I'm have about 55 users under Active Directory running on Win Server 2008. I had bought a couple Seagate Black Armor NAS boxes (440 & 420) but was told these can easily be hacked. The Server is Dell and most of the PC's are Dell. I want to do weekly backups of each users My Documents and Desktop files. I just don't know anything about centralized backup. I contacted Dell and they suggested Backup Exec along with Western Digital or Data Robotics storage (these look like my Seagates).

Quick Sync pop ups

Hi,

Have wiped and reinstalled my 10" compaq netbook 110c-1120sa before selling it and it is fully updated with everything possible but it is plagued by a Quick Sync problem and my ISP has suggested removing Quick Sync from the machine as it keeps giving pop -ups saying "QS has a problem and has to close" etc.

ISP reckons it is causing the hardrive to make internet connections unreliable...?

Running XP Home.

Any suggestions please

Thanks

...and is it a necessary part of the workings on the computer?

If the "Quick Sync" referred to here is Intel's music and video editing/sharing program, then it's not a required program and one would ask what it's doing on a "netbook"? If that's the case, then uninstalling it shouldn't hurt a thing. Other editing/converting software should be available for the new owner, should they need it.

HP also has a "Quicksync" program. There are other tools which are available instead of this particular "sync" software for anyone that might need it.. I'll guess future owners of the netbook could also download the software from the HP website as well. It can be uninstalled from the Control Panel or by going to "c:SWSetupQuickSyncHpQuickSync.exe", then run the .exe file and choose "Remove".

Hope this helps.

When I have the "freedom & time" to do that tomorrow, I will try the HP answer. I am reasonably sure it is HP rather than Intel. Will update in due course. Much appreciated.

Sounds a bit strange but had to do this surrruptitiously as the wife doesnt want me to help new owner (long story) but have uninstalled via C/Panel. Couldnt bring it up on RUN as it appeared to be not installed properly, so it gave error message of "undefined"

Will have to return it to owner to see if it works better now and update as and when.

Thanks again.

Hello,
To explain in short, I have sold this Compaq netbook to a friend in December and unfortunately, she has had nothing but problems with it since. Mainly in terms of successfully connecting to the internet. Now apparently it is throwing up messages like Windows Diagnostic has detected that this PC contains both wired ethernet and wireless network adaptors.
Unfortunately, new owner is not experienced, so cannot deal with any issues that arise. If anyone could offer any advice on how I can advise her to deal with this I would be very grateful.
When I have been there, there seems to be a reliable TalkTalk connection to the master socket from which she also has a cordless phone off of an adaptor after the filter. There is a filter on the two other sockets upstairs also, with a cordless phone on one of them. Her home is less than half a mile from the exchange.
When using the TalkTalk Broadband Speed Test webpage has showed messages saying that there were (are?) problems at the exchange but I dont know if this is still relevant. Other Speed test websites have showed an acceptable BB speed being supplied.
Many thanks

If the computer has both a wired connection and a wireless connection occuring at the same time, it will cause issues.. So, if the user is trying to connect through an ethernet cable, be sure to use the wireless icon in the lower right corner to find the "available wireless networks", then "disconnect" all wireless connections and make them manual so they don't attempt to connect "automatically".

If the user is attempting a wireless network connection, make sure all ethernet cables are unplugged.

Next, because you originally stated you had "wiped and reinstalled" the original computer with the new operating system, please visit the computer manufacturer's website and download, then reinstall all network adapter drivers again.. (Instead, you may want to visit the wireless and ethernet adapter manufacturer's websites and download their "newest" drivers for those devices..) Confirming the drivers are updated and working may also help with the connection problem.

And after that, on Windows XP, try running the WinsockXPFix tool to repair any damaged internet connection software. Here's that link:

Hope this helps.

INFIX PDF Editor

I downloaded INFIX PDF Editor and have found it to be a great help. I have to do several different forms in my job all PDF files and INFIX has cut my paper work in half. Now when I get a job done I just fill the forms out on the laptop and send them in. No more printing forms and filling them out by hand then faxing them in. If anyone is looking for a great PDF EDITOR INFIX is the one.
